What Are Same-Day Implants?

Same-day dental implants, or immediate implants, are inserted at the same surgical visit as a tooth extraction. This can only be performed if there is enough adequate jaw bone to support the implant, serving as a solid and secure foundation.

If bone loss has occurred and there is not enough bone to support a dental implant, Dr. Martin can place a bone graft into the empty tooth socket following extraction. Bone grafts promote the growth of new bone. Once the graft has healed, there will be enough healthy bone in the jaw and you can return for implant surgery to have the post inserted.

With traditional implants, your surgeon extracts a tooth and it takes several weeks for the socket to heal. Once healed, your surgeon places the implant post, which takes several more weeks for the post to fuse to the jaw bone. Once healed, the final crown is placed.

When you choose to replace a tooth with same-day dental implants, you eliminate this initial waiting period for the socket to heal. Instead, Dr. Martin can insert a dental implant into the empty socket immediately following extraction. This eliminates the need for a dental implant procedure to place the implant post. You can even receive a same-day dental implant-supported bridge if you have multiple missing teeth.

Your Options Following Tooth Extraction

If you are having one or more teeth extracted, there are several options to consider for replacing the missing tooth. At the consultation, we will perform an oral exam and discuss all of these options with you to determine the right choice for your oral health and financial situation.

• Same-Day Dental Implant. After a tooth is extracted, Dr. Martin can immediately insert the implant post. You will not need to go without a tooth, and the dental implant healing process begins immediately. Within several months, your implant is fully healed and will function just like a natural tooth.
• Socket Preservation. If you do not wish to immediately replace the missing tooth, we can insert bone grafting material into the empty socket. This bone grafting technique, known as socket preservation, maintains the size and shape of the tooth socket to make future dental implant restoration more effective.
• No Restoration. Teeth are necessary to preserve jaw bone strength. When even a single tooth is missing, the jaw bone will begin to weaken, causing facial sagging and dental shifting. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that stimulates the jaw bone the same way as tooth roots, keeping it healthy. If there is no tooth root or implant post present to provide stimulation, you are more susceptible to jaw bone deterioration.
